Time again for another intern profile. This time it is for one of our rather new Business Development interns. Savannah Miller came to us at the end of January, and she has been such a positive and hardworking person!
Here is what she has to say about herself:
My name is Savannah Miller and I recently moved to Ft. Collins from Tallahassee, Florida. I earned my undergraduate degree at Florida State University in International Affairs. I have a passion for travel and learning about other cultures. I love the outdoors and frequently go hiking and camping.
Q: When did you first become interested in sustainability?
Sustainability has always been a prominent value in my lifestyle. I grew up in an environmentally conscious home, where composting was automatic and the idea of sustainable living was something we strived for. My parents installed solar panels on our home in 2006, which sparked my interest in solar energy and efficient, green homes.
Q: What are the most interesting/important things that you’ve learned since being an intern at Nourish the Planet?
I have learned so very much about Aquaponics and how they function. I had some familiarity with hydroponics in the past but it was very exciting to see the systems in action and see exactly how they work.
Q: How do you incorporate sustainability into your life?
I am an active composter and recycler. I enjoy being able to garden and produce some of my own produce. I drive a Prius and try to bicycle often instead of driving.
Q: What do you want to see change in the world in the next 10 years?
I think that if people just change small habits such as starting to recycle or buying and eating local then this will greatly affect the rate of environmental degradation. I would love for solar and wind energy to be at the forefront of our energy production.
Q: What are your goals for the future?
I plan to move into a property that would allow me to raise my own chickens as well as have a significant garden in which to grow produce. I greatly want to become more self-reliant when it comes to food production.
Q: If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
It would be to become a vegetarian while you’re young! I don’t eat a lot of meat now but I wish I wasn’t so addicted to it.
Q: What is the number one place that you would like to travel to?
I would LOVE to travel to India. I have traveled extensively but not to the Far East. Plus Indian food is my Favorite!
Q: What do you do to “get away from it all” or what is your passion?
When I want to just get away from it all I enjoy taking my IPod and wandering out into the foothills. I love hiking and walking out in nature really relaxes me.
Q: What is your favorite book that you’ve read in the past year?
I re-read Swiss Family Robinson this year. It was one of my favorite books as a child and re-reading it was wonderful. The writing is beautiful and it is just such an amazing adventure story.
Q: What do you wish you were better at?
I wish I could play an instrument. I have tried, but I am unfortunately completely musically inept.
Q: Name one thing that you could not live without?
I could not live without my phone. I just recently moved out to Ft. Collins from Tallahassee, FL and my phone is my link to my family and friends who still live there. I couldn’t live without the relationships I have with them!
Thanks so much, Savannah! You’ve been such a great asset to our company!
