One of the biggest complaints with solar is its perceived unattractiveness. Especially in urban environments, where space needs to be optimized in every possible way and energy consumption is as high as the buildings are tall, there tends to be a problem for solar development. It is here where creativity and artistic thought can be combined with functionality to create new solutions to city’s energy stresses.  Case in point, the newly installed “Solar Trees” at Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. These installations are at once intriguing modern art and functional energy producing solar panels. They make the most of what would otherwise be wasted parking lot space to help power their facilities. The design also fits in beautifully in an urban setting, creating not an eye sore but a beautiful artistic expression.
