“World’s First Solar Powered Airport Has Arrived. Cochin International Airport in the southern state of Kerala, India is officially the world’s first airport that runs exclusively on solar power.”- EcoWatch
This is just exciting news! We’ve been tracking the progress made in the solar industry thus far, and it’s been simply amazing. First came Solar impulse 2 – world’s first solar plane being able to fly day and night, entirely on solar power, without burning any fuel at all, and then Cochin International Airport followed, which is the world’s first international airport to be powered entirely by solar panels.
Recently, we’ve seen developments in the solar industry in European countries like Germany and France, where they were able to power the majority of their entire country using renewable energy sources. These countries have made some remarkable progress in the renewable power industry. But this time, warm and sunny India took us by surprise by launching Cochin International Airport, the first international airport in the world to operate entirely on solar power.
India is much sunnier than Europe, and so, they are turning to green technology and taking advantage of their sunny and warm climate. However, it’s not the first airport in the world to use solar panels. According to techinasia.com, it’s the first airport in the world to operate fully on solar power with its own 12 MWp (megawatt peak) solar power plant. It has 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres. This generates 50,000 to 60,000 thousand units of electricity every day.
India took it’s time to emerge into the green industry, and revolutionized the way solar power can be used in a country that has a high pollution level and also receives, on an average, six times more sunshine than the European countries.
“Over the next 25 years, this green power project will avoid carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants by more than 300,000 metric tons, which is equivalent to planting three million trees,” – official statement from the airport authorities.
The future is looking really bright for solar power. Scientists speculate that in the future, all our energy will come from renewable sources. As the solar industry develops, solar panels will become more efficient, and will be able to supply the majority of energy requirements, eliminating the need to burn fossil fuels anymore.
