I had an interesting first full day as an intern at Nourish the Planet. I mostly did the usual first day activities such as becoming acquainted with the staff and office/warehouse space. I met my internship supervisor, Justin, as well as a fellow intern, Trent. Everyone was very nice and welcoming.
One of the first things we did was learn how to feed the fish (what type of feed, how much, etc.). We also did some water testing, where we tested for pH, ammonia, and nitrites; this part was very interesting to me, as I understand the basics of nutrients and nutrient cycling. But it was my first time testing for these components, especially on an aquaponics system. I also got a tour of the shipping containers that housed the micro greens and lettuces/herbs, which was a very interesting and unique set-up. The rest of the day consisted of organizing the warehouse and talking about the game plan for the near future regarding the company.
Apparently I started at kind of a difficult time because Nourish the Planet is in the process of moving. I got totalk a good deal with Justin about the systems, how they work, and my goals and expectations for the internship. I asked alot of questions, hoping to soak up as much information as I could. You could tell he was very knowledgeable and passionate about agriculture and sustainability. It was good to have someone to talk sustainability and share ideas with in a professional setting. I’m anxious to learn more and excited for the possibilities.
