Aging is natural and an inevitable part of life. However, there are many factors that influence how fast we age and how young we look and feel. Over the last few decades, the average life expectancy and well-being of humans have increased due to rapid progress of medical science and technology. There are many obvious reasons for why people tend to age faster and many habits that may seem harmless to those that may be more prone to premature aging, may make you age faster.
Some of the major causes of aging lie in our genes. If you inherited good traits from your parents, you are more likely to age slowly. For example, if your mother looked like she was 40 when she was actually 60 years old, chances are you will have the same affect. Many of us start showing signs of aging at an early age. Our face starts to show fine lines, our body starts aching, we have difficulty concentrating, and we feel less energetic. If you want to stay looking younger for a longer period of time, then you will need to have regular practice, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle.
Here are a list of 10 things you can do to slow down aging
1. Eat Seasonally:
Eating seasonally gives you a good supply of nutrients that your body needs. If you are not eating seasonally, you might be depriving your body of the essential nutrients it needs. To stay looking younger, avoid processed or frozen foods and eat fresh, farm-grown food instead. Not only does it help local farmers, but it also reduces carbon from emission shipping and trucking, and energy wastage associated with processing, packaging and storage of food. Also, locally grown food is cheaper than imported, packaged food.
2. Eat healthy
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to get healthier looking skin. Healthy proteins and a well balanced diet is the key to looking and feeling younger. Cut back on fat and processed carbohydrates and eat plenty of fish with Omega-3, which is good for your body and mind. Also cut back on greasy, high calorie foods such as pizza, ice cream, cakes, steaks, and other types of red meat, and eat more fish, walnuts, flax seeds, and other types of nuts. This food will not only make you look and feel younger, but it will also help reduce wrinkles, boost your health, and increase your lifespan. Sugar has the most adverse effect on your skin, so cut back on sugar as much as you can. Also, supplement your diet with vitamins and antioxidants. You will need extra calcium in your diet as you grow older.
There are immeasurable benefits of regular exercise for looking and feeling younger. Lack of exercise not only shortens your life, but it also ages you faster, increasing risks of several heart diseases and other health-related problems. Exercising keeps your brain active and increases blood flow in your brain. Regular physical activities such as walking, jogging, or playing sports can also improve the way you look by increasing blood circulation in your skin as well as reducing stress.
Obesity is one of the key factors behind aging faster. However, the good news is that as we get older, gaining a few extra pounds might actually make us look better. A little extra fat around our under arms, neck, or cheek can give us a fuller look and reduce wrinkles. Therefore, to avoid the skinny look at old age, you must target optimal weight for your body.
4. Use less soap and more face scrubs
Washing your face with soap actually robs your skin of natural oils and protective layers of acid. Your face tends to get dry and wrinkly more easily if you wash your face with soap. Using face scrubs and moisturizers can help keep your face looking younger. Exfoliate and get rid of any dirt hidden in the pores of your skin to give you a radiant glow.
5. Turn down the loud music
Hearing loss is another sign of aging. Today, many younger people suffer from diminished hearing because they listen to loud music through their headphones on their SmartPhones. Listening to music with moderate volume is likely to do you less harm.
6. Use sun-block
q*4 /6 The outdoors can be fun, but staying out in the sun for too long can dry out our skin and make it look leathery, which makes us look older, faster. Dryness of skin creates and deepens wrinkles. Also, if you use a tanning bed, it exposes your skin to ultraviolet rays 12-15 times more than the sun. In a recent survey, it was revealed that 45% of young women in the United States use tanning beds to get a tan. If you have to be outside between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM, use plenty of sun block on your skin, including your lips. Put on your sunglasses and protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays as well.
Pollution, heat, cold, and wind can also dry up your skin, stealing away the natural oils and protective layers from your skin. If you live in an area where the air quality is poor, you are more likely to have dull skin. Protect your skin from dirt and pollution when you are exposed to extreme weather conditions.
8. Smoking & drinking
Smoking has been scientifically proven to destroy the skin. It dries out our skin by robbing it of its moisture and oils. It also reduces blood circulation and flow of oxygen. When we smoke, we also get wrinkles around our lips. The nicotine absorbed by our body prevents essential nutrients and antioxidants, such as vitamin A and C, from reaching our skin, leaving us with dull-looking skin. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels on the surface of the skin, making it appear red. The broken vessels can cause our skin to look older than we really are.
Many of us do not realize this, but our attitudes on life have a profound effect on how we look and age. Having a positive attitude throughout your everyday activities can affect how fast you age. There are obvious signs on your face that permanently etches as you grow older. If you keep a sad and annoyed face all the time, your expression and lines on your face will become permanent. Smiling and keeping a happy face will instantly make you look a lot brighter and radiant. If we are happy, our facial muscles are relaxed and we have less chances of getting wrinkles.
Getting the right amount of sleep is essential for having healthy skin. When we sleep, our skin goes to work. Sleep deprivation can double the aging signs on our skin and make it harder for us to recover from sun and weather damages. A study conducted on 50 women aging from 30-49 years old shows that getting a good night’s sleep can readily reduce and repair sun damage and make women look more attractive. Sleep deprived women, on the other hand, showed more aging signs and fine lines on their skin.
Your face represents how well you are and often tells us how healthy you are. Your facial expressions are echoed on your face and lines become deeper with time. The key to living healthier and staying younger for a longer period of time is to avoid things that are harmful for your general health. Limit the use of electronic devices, interact with people face to face more often, and keep your body and mind more active, peaceful, and stress free in order to look younger and feel more attractive for a longer period of time.
